The advantages of farm-gate sales in Austria

Meanwhile, especially in Austria, many companies from the agricultural sector have specialized in a business model that makes them independent of traders, supermarket chains and corporations.

We are talking here about the model of self-marketing or. of the sale of own products directly at the farm. By selling their own products at the farm, there are numerous advantages for farmers.

First of all, you no longer have to worry about organizing a distribution channel. The search for traders, the maintenance of relationships with commercial agents and also the negotiation with middlemen for prices and quantities are omitted in the variant of the farm-gate sale.

A second, much more important advantage, is the price. Those farmers who sell their products directly to end customers achieve a much higher price than those who rely on traders or supermarkets.

This is mainly due to the fact that those customers who consciously buy directly from the producer are willing to pay a higher price. In this case, a higher farm-gate price implies a higher profit for the farmers.

Although they have to use this profit to organize the sale and market their own products themselves, but in general it can be said that in this variant a large part of the profit made at the end of the day remains.

Farm-gate sales in Austria

In the beginning it was mainly meat, vegetables and fruits that were sold by farmers directly from the farm to their customers.

Today, however, this successful business model has also expanded to include some other agricultural product lines from the food segment.

A good example that underlines this trend is the direct sale of edible oils from a small Styrian oil mill.

Oils and medicinal oils from Fandler in Austria

Above all, the flagship product of the oil mill, linseed oil, which is said to have a particularly positive and healthy effect on the human organism, is sold very successfully in a direct way.

This is mainly due to one ingredient of the oil: Omega 3 fatty acids.

Omega 3 fatty acids are unsaturated fats, which are also found in fish products, for example. In addition to the healthy effect of linseed oil, however, customers appreciate above all its unique full taste.

Today, the oil mill already sells more than 15 different oils directly to its customers.
